ABSTRACT

Material culture, objects and artifacts related to sport, are a critical element in the storytelling of the past, sometimes even the focus of the story being told. In the first decade of the twenty-first century, a handful of scholars published works that focused on the material culture of sport. Understanding sporting cultures, both ancient and modern, has been greatly enhanced by the increasing reliance of scholars on utilizing material culture in their inquiries to tell the stories of the sporting past. Perhaps in response to the growing number of sport historians examining material culture, several academic journals published special issues focusing on the material culture of sport. Museums, specifically sport museums, are the greatest repositories of material culture related to sport. Sport museums utilize material objects to tell stories of the past to visitors through visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic exhibitions.
