ABSTRACT

Heritage and sport share an important relationship. Sporting events and achievements generate memories and important touchstones for individuals and communities alike, while sporting traditions, rituals, and superstitions become part of the behaviours and activities of both spectators and competitors. Famous sporting sites, such as arenas, stadiums, sporting routes, and sport landscapes are recognized and conserved by heritage societies, organizations, and public agencies as important places and can become magnets for devoted sporting pilgrims. This chapter explores the concept of sport heritage and the types of sport heritage. The sport heritage typology considers different forms and manifestations of sport heritage. Specifically, the sport heritage typology includes: tangible immovable sport heritage, tangible movable sport heritage, intangible sport heritage, and goods and services with a sport heritage component. The sport heritage typology offers a useful framework for exploring the major facets of sport heritage.
