ABSTRACT

In 1982, The British Society of Sports Historians changed its name to the British Society of Sports History (BSSH), whose declared mission was ‘to stimulate, promote and co-ordinate interest in the historical study of sport, physical education, recreation and leisure with special reference to the British Isles’. The bibliographies published in the BSSHBulletin that transitioned into The Sports Historian dealt with everything published on Britain by a range of sports statisticians, antiquaries, chroniclers, and independent researchers. An important factor in maintaining continuity in the operation of the journal has been the practice of ensuring that incoming editors always have an experiential period as part of the editorial board before taking on a leadership role. The focus on inclusivity has partly informed the special issues that have become a feature of Sport in History.
