ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 focuses on traumatic injuries and their definitions. Detailed discussions are provided as well as numerous pictures displaying blunt force injuries such as lacerations and contusions, sharp force injuries such as stab wounds, and firearm injuries including gunshot and shotgun wounds. The chapter also delves into classifying asphyxias as physical asphyxias, chemical asphyxias, and environmental asphyxias. Drowning and central nervous system mediated asphyxia are also covered. Other injuries described include those from electrocution, lightning, fire deaths, hypothermia and hyperthermia, motor vehicle crashes, and pedestrian injuries. Lastly, some highlights of pediatric forensic pathology are described including in-depth investigation of childhood fatalities, and child abuse, the battered child syndrome, abusive head trauma, and neglect of children.
