ABSTRACT
Viktor Orbán’s rise and grip on power for decades has been a unique achievement in a democratic European country. This chapter proposes to analyse this first by way of using Machiavelli’s conception of mixing the strategies of adaptation and perseverance, then by considering the traditional image of the political father, and finally the anthropological concepts of the Protean god and of the trickster.
