ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the crime of witchcraft accusation and victimization in Nepal, including the relationships between victims and offenders and the interactions between victims and the criminal justice system that is police personnel. The researcher found that in Nepal, incidents of witchcraft accusation were reported throughout the year in 30 different districts, while in 10 districts the incidences were repeated. However, the number of women victims is found to be comparatively higher. In Nepal, there is only one exclusive provision in law about witchcraft accusation in society. The laws do not define victims’ rights particularly. The perpetrators in witchcraft accusation consists of family members, local villagers or neighbours, witch doctors, local group and even the educated member of society such as teachers, politicians and in one case police too. The state needs to intervene in the practice immediately through the criminal justice system.
