Interestingly, Maldives is the first Islamic country to have a comprehensive and fully codified penal code without leaving out any essential Islamic criminal law principles. The first police force of the Maldives was established by law in 1933 under colonial rule. In September 2004, the Maldives Police Service was created as a civilian law-enforcing body under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The key legislation relating to the administration of judiciary in the Maldives is the Judicature Act 2010. The Inspector of the Correctional Services is nominated by the Minister of Home Affairs. It is the responsibility of the Inspector to ensure that the structures of the prison are in adherence to the specified standards, that the prisoners receive basic service and that their basic rights are respected.
