ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the criminal justice system of Pakistan including the criminal justice processes and functioning of the criminal justice system in Pakistan and the issues of crime situation, policing, judiciary, and prisons in Pakistan. The criminal justice system of Pakistan fundamentally consists of legislature, judiciary, and executive bodies. Policing in Pakistan is more of a provincial approach in which four main regions are identified across the country and respectively provided with provincial police departments. The four regions are: Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan. The role of the judiciary extends to remedial measures as well through judgments prescribing rehabilitation, reformation, and reintegration of the wrongdoer. Prison administration, duties of prison staff/officers, discharge of prisoners, work assigned, and treatment are done in accordance with the Prisons Act of 1894 of Pakistan. In Pakistan, the majority of the population residing in rural areas resorts to informal modes of legal systems in which the tribal laws are implemented through Jirga courts.
