ABSTRACT

This chapter brings together the main themes explored in this book and looks at what the future might hold for rugby union as it continues to develop in different parts of the world. With reference to both a ‘journey of hope’ as articulated by Raymond Williams, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, it considers the challenges and possibilities for rugby over the next decade. This chapter highlights the important role that achieving Olympic status has had for the sport of rugby and the increased development of the women’s game in relation to this. It also discusses some of the contemporary challenges facing the game and considers what more needs to be done for rugby to push forward towards 2030.
