ABSTRACT
This chapter explores how the Child-Friendly School system can be used as an inspiration for creating a better education system. Child-Friendly Schools are schools set up by charities, including the United Nations International Children’s Fund, in developing nations, often during crisis situations. Schools can model grassroots agency and ethical values even in marginal circumstances, helping students see the possibilities for local action to understand and mitigate climate change. Children are considered agents of change and when “empowered and educated on climate change can reduce the vulnerability of themselves and their communities to risk and contribute to sustainable development”. In Portland, Oregon, the local school board passed a resolution in May 2016 to incorporate climate justice in its schools’ curriculum. One child at a time, one school at a time, or one community at a time, the push for education reform must continue as an essential contributor towards climate justice.
