ABSTRACT

Broadcast journalists are expected to write “print” versions of their stories for the web and print journalists are expected to shoot video and record audio for digital platforms. Snapchat is getting more notice, but most journalists agreed they had not yet figured out how to integrate it into their daily reporting routines. The chapter addresses how those skills come together, making them effective for students as students move into the world of the working journalist. Steve Booher, multimedia news editor of News Press frequently talks to college student journalists about what he wants to see when students apply to work for him. Tim Stephens said his observations from his time as a traditional print journalist, which eventually evolved into a multimedia editor, have led him to many of the same conclusions as Booher. To be employed as a multimedia journalist, students will need a digital portfolio and resume–a website that showcases students storytelling abilities across multiple platforms.
