ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the various ways in which today’s journalists will be expected to write for different media and ply their trade across platforms. Media companies demand more from their journalists today, with the days of print or broadcast specialization no longer being viable options for most new practitioners. The chapter explains the best ways to write simply and directly, regardless of platform, and how that approach can best reach the readers and viewers. The chapter then examines the similarities and differences between traditional print and broadcast writing, as well as how it translates to digital platforms, such as online video, podcasting and social media. The chapter also explains WHY those differences exist and how they help both the journalists and the consumers. Extensive examples demonstrate specific changes writers can make to their copy that will make it better for specific platforms that they write on.
