ABSTRACT

This chapter offers the tips and advices on how to find great stories, as well as the mindset a reporter needs to chase that big story. It describes where to look for stories on a traditional news beat as well as how to go beyond the beat to find interesting and important news stories. A long-standing rule of journalism is that people want to know what is happening where they live, which is a simple way of saying their geographic region. The excitement of being in journalism is discovering new information and untold stories. Stories obtained through social media, like any other stories, require not only the inquisitiveness and curiosity of the journalist but also the tenacity to confirm the information found. The term data-driven journalism was coined in 2009 by journalists analyzing and filtering data sets for news stories. Local stories are the life blood of news.
