ABSTRACT

This chapter presents basic reporting tactics. It examines the issues such as information gathering, the value of information, online research and access to information. Other areas of access include recording telephone conversations, shooting video of outdoor seating at a street-side cafe and attending school board meetings. The chapter provides the tools to find, evaluate and uses information when developing a story. Search engines can lead a reporter to a surplus of information. Social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit and LinkedIn, can be great secondary sources of information. Businesses, political groups, sports teams and other organizations all want to send their messages to the public. Public Officials are elected and appointed local, state and federal government officials. The decision made by Public Officials affect everyday citizens–Real People who are caught in the works performed by Public Officials For journalists, people with information are valued sources.
