ABSTRACT
Against presumed affinities between tabloids and populism, this chapter investigates how the Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet related to two populist interventions in the Danish political landscape: the bursting into parliament of the Progress Party in 1973 and the huge success of the Progress Party’s de facto successor, the Danish People’s Party, in the 2015 election. By looking at these two instances 42 years apart, this chapter aims, on the one hand, to present insights into the role and developments of tabloids within the political landscape of Denmark and, on the other, to contribute to broader discussions about how tabloids, broadsheets, and populism co-exist and develop through complex relations where communicative boundaries and transgressions are constantly negotiated.
