ABSTRACT

The motivation to maintain and conserve ecology for the purpose of cultural survival will be the central focus of this book, as the conditions of the Anthropocene urgently require the identification, understanding and support of enduring, self-perpetuating biocultural associations. Folk value is the term rendered to refer to this value of the more-than-human living world to cultural cohesion and survival, as opposed to individual well-being. The motivation to maintain and conserve ecology for the purpose of cultural survival will be the central focus of this book, as the conditions of the Anthropocene urgently require the identification, understanding and support of enduring, self-perpetuating biocultural associations. The concept of folk value is a timely and important innovation in sustainability studies for the following reasons. As such, this cross-cultural, multi-case exploration of tree folk value around the world represents low hanging fruit for the larger project of supporting the strong and vital bonds stowed in cultural value for the more-than-human living world.
