ABSTRACT

This chapter encompasses an overview of data analysis in ethnographic research. The preparation and description of data will be discussed. It is stated that data analysis need not be rigid but should be rigorous and careful. Several different general types of data analysis are shown, for instance coding, categorising, thematising, and their bases in a variety of approaches are briefly described, such as grounded theory, phenomenology and narrative inquiry. Towards the end of the chapter, computer analysis and its advantages and problems are discussed. The list of references indicates some texts to which the researcher might look for more specific approaches.
