ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses practical methods for recruiting private practices and hospitals as well as recruiting patients inside and outside of healthcare settings, including rare disease patients. It looks at some of the recruitment challenges of each type of sample and setting and explains methods that have proven helpful. Specifically, the chapter explores where to go, who to talk to, and what to say when recruiting healthcare participants. It covers the organizational challenges specific to healthcare recruiting: getting past gatekeepers, ensuring participant privacy, as well as navigating IRBs and similar ethics research committees. The chapter was written by Melinda Rea-Holloway and Steve Hagelman who have conducted ethnographies for healthcare companies for over 18 years.
