ABSTRACT

Traditionally, the idea of cluster preferability or markedness has been captured by the Sonority Sequencing Generalization (SSG). Another measure of phonotactic preferability is Net Auditory Distance (NAD). The goal of the present contribution is to provide an analysis of clusters in English and Polish in terms of the SSG and NAD. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation of word-initial consonant clusters from the perspective of type and token frequencies. The study provides an illustration of markedness of linguistic structures in relation to frequency.
