ABSTRACT

There is no disputing the fact that the theoretical frameworks of social work, just as many other disciplines of higher education, primarily are the derivatives of Western ideologies and thoughts that do not essentially capture the social realities and values of the Indian society and culture. Even though the main inspiration of social work comes from volunteerism, charity and religion, yet, the curriculum still remains divorced from its religious roots. Western approach adopted by trained social workers in India that completely rejects the religious roots of social work, has jeopardized the moral foundations and public support base of social work in the country. Social work educators since decades have been emphasizing on establishing theories and practice models within the social, cultural and economic contextual frame of India. The requirement of incorporation of contextual learning and orientation is all the more vital for a profession such as social work, which directly deals with the needs of the society.
