ABSTRACT

One could equate the witches’ and wizards’ magic and its use in J.K. Rowling’s Potterverse with technology in the way we “Muggles” use and rely upon technology and science in our daily lives. Magic is the wizarding world’s technology and its science, thus one can think of the Hallows and Horcruxes as magical equivalents of technological tools and scientific advances to attain immortality. More specifically, this chapter argues that both Hallows and Horcruxes are posthuman technological tools. The chapter explores the detrimental effects of excess consumption of these posthuman technologies, particularly in relation to Albus Dumbledore and Voldemort, and why we need better structures in place to address these ethical and unethical boundaries of consumption.
