ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the ongoing importance of research examining families, sport, and leisure drawing on a social justice framework. The chapter considers recent social events, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Black Lives Matter social protests to discuss the implications for ongoing family, sport, and leisure research and why such analyses have relevance. The chapter overviews specific areas for future research, including examination of the family as agents of social change through sport and leisure, an urgent need for indigenous-led scholarships examining families, families as educators through sport and leisure, and the reimagined families, considering what family, leisure, and sport mean post-pandemic. In this chapter, we advocate that family-oriented research is essential for advancing social justice within sport and leisure contexts.
