ABSTRACT

This chapter provides examples of privatization related to nursing home care in three of the four Canadian provinces in our study. It sets out both commonalities and differences among Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and Ontario, identifying factors that contribute to these commonalities and differences within a single federation. The British Columbia case is discussed in Chapter 6 in this volume. All three provinces discussed here provide public funding for nursing home residents’ care (provided by nurses, care aides, physicians, and some therapists) while charging what are sometimes called accommodation or der diem fees associated with room and board. However, as a study for our project shows, there is inconsistency across jurisdictions in what is considered ‘care’, and in how much public coverage there is for capital costs, therapies, and other services.
