ABSTRACT
On our journey through the three continents of the embodiment-projective-role (EPR) sequence, this chapter finds us on the continent of projective play. One of the main types of play in the realm of projective play is small world play. In this chapter, small world play is defined within the context of the overarching category of projective play. An historical overview of small world play illustrates how this type of play has held importance for humans across time. Theoretical foundations that support and ground the inclusion of small world play, in play therapy, are detailed. The neuro-bio-psycho-social benefits of projective play are situated within the opportunities afforded to children so that they may externalise their internal thoughts and feelings onto toys and creative materials. The case study presented uses the four domains of the therapeutic powers of play (TPoP) to highlight the versatility of small world play as a type of play has the potential to activate the twenty core agents for change. Finally, recommended resources aim to support clinicians in the advancement of the theory – practice nexus for projective and small world play.
