ABSTRACT

This chapter elaborates upon the agony and sufferings of people who got married to someone with mental health challenges, without prior knowledge of the problem. Children are the most affected people by such situations. Their sufferings include neglect, abuse, witnessing violence in the family and sometimes traumatic experiences. Thus, overall mental health in later life becomes vulnerable in addition to retarded career growth. Parents’ irresponsible behavior, which is not seeking mental health support services and arranging the marriage of their child without revealing much about any illness, is mainly responsible for unbearable sufferings of innocent people. In some cases, extreme pampering and/or overindulgence make their children a misfit in adjusting to different life situations, resulting into problems after marriage and irresponsible behaviors. Not taking children to mental health professionals by the parents and/or continuous denial of the problem despite warnings by the sufferer’s means jeopardizing with the quality of life of their own child as well as all other family members. Finally, leading life with mental health challenges is a loss of human resources of double the number of people. The issue calls for debate and discussion for bringing appropriate legislation for protection of the rights of innocent people, that is, right to life and safety.
