ABSTRACT

The woman’s role is ever changing with time from periods of pre-independence to the post-independence era. Today, with the shifting scenario, we can observe women playing equal and important roles, as men are, in various forums in society. However, as we observe around us, the woman is still victimized by various social evils. As the nation develops, various measures are being taken towards women empowerment. In order to empower women, education is an important tool in the society. This chapter analyzes the status of women in India with the current population residing in different areas like rural and urban. The role of the woman in the society is also examined by highlighting upon the participation of women in various occupational sectors. With increase in equal opportunities, violence against women is also explored by tapping on various protective social and legal measures. The current status of women in India, though improving with various measures taken by government and other social agencies, needs to travel a long way since a large number of women experience violence and crime. In other words, it might be stated that the status of women in India is paradoxical. On one hand, the society worship women, while in real life, a good number of them experience harassment and violence.
