ABSTRACT

Over the length of time you will be teaching not only will you be experiencing many emotional and social issues within your classroom, but you will also become familiar with the various special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) of the children and students you teach. ADHD is characterised by impulsive and hyperactive behaviours, as well as distractibility and inattention, thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Autism spectrum condition (ASC) is an umbrella term to describe people who have a common set of characteristics related to their ability to communicate in a social world. ASC is a neuro-developmental disorder that impacts on normal brain development. Students with autism may often struggle with managing their behaviour, and there is always a reason behind this – usually because they are anxious or having difficulties and so will go into their ‘defence mode’.
