ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the issues of disability and impairment as these affect people in contemporary Scotland. It considers the historical and ideological underpinnings of current policy in relation to this topic, noting the influence of certain definitions, models and initiatives. It also considers the emergence of SDS and noted that disability and impairment bring with them additional challenges in the form of hate crime, under- or unemployment and, inevitably, poverty.
