ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summary of key developments in education since the creation of the Scottish Education Department in 1885. It will look at the state’s role in the provision of education and the partnership between central and local government. The concept of life-long learning and training opportunities for 16- to 24-year-olds will be explored. The chapter ends with the consideration of disadvantage within the education system with reference to social class, gender, disability and ethnicity.
