ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a general overview of the subject area of social policy and describes in general terms what it is, how it is made, why it exists and what it generally looks like. The authors also consider the relationship between social policy, the law and other forms of guidance (both statutory and non-statutory) and the relevance to and the effect upon professional practice(s), highlighting some significant themes that will be developed in subsequent chapters.
