ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the work undertaken since devolution to support the well-being of children and young people within Wales. In areas such as the former mining communities, there exists a culture of defeatism combined with high levels of child poverty and low educational attainment. The challenge for Welsh Government, as well as key stakeholders and third sector organisations, has been to develop policy that supports and promotes resilience and facilitate upward social mobility. In 2012, initial consultation plans began for a new well-being act within Wales. The Well-being of Future Generations Act passed in 2015 and became the first law of its kind within the world. Utilising the concept of sustainability to promote the economic, social, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales, it outlined seven well-being goals seen as essential to the future prosperity of Wales for generations to come.
