ABSTRACT

Disengagement is reversing the effects of engagement. Disenchantment is reversing the effects of enchantment. Disepistemology is reversing the effects of epistemology, overcoming its debilitating effect on philosophical thinking about knowledge. For Rorty that means finding ways to evade the problems of philosophy’s epistemological tradition. His idea is to reformulate the old questions of epistemology as new questions of cultural politics. That should efficiently sort out the worthwhile from the useless, predictably leaving the textbook problems of epistemology in the latter category. I explain why Rorty’s strategy seems unpromising and suggest an alternative approach to disenfranchising epistemology.
