ABSTRACT

The modern era was a time of great social and religious upheaval. The 20th century saw two World Wars and many regional wars from the Korean to the Bosnian and beyond to Sierra Leone and far and wide. It has been a tremulous time. A time of resisting Empire and internal oppressions resulting in ‘terrorism’ or depending on one's view, nationalist movements and freedom fighters. Women were of course involved in all these events, in many cases as fighters and in others those who watched as their sons killed and died. The efficiency with which we killed one another increased dramatically as the period went on moving from hand to hand and some canon and tank to a position where people no longer needed to face each other as they take life, drones will do it for them. Killing looks just like a video game these days that carries its own ethical and psychological questions that are beyond the bounds of this piece but have been examined by contemporary feminist philosophers.
