ABSTRACT

“Linking Language and Literature” describes the infusion of foreign language content into a General Education literature course in the humanities that centers on the notion of “Crazy Love.” A discussion-based course that incorporates project-based learning, Humanities 2610, Foreign Literature in Translation, has for its goal the expansion of global perspectives and worldview. Students are able to accomplish this goal through the study of world literature from Algeria, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Senegal. In addition to raising cultural awareness, examining literature originally written in French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish provides a tremendous opportunity to expose students to words, phrases, and other aspects of foreign languages in order to peak their interest in language study. This chapter offers concrete examples of the ways to include foreign language content in the teaching of global literature that has been translated into English in order to enrich students’ understanding of both language and literature, as well as the link between the two.
