ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the idea of architectural work and the necessity to recognize that architectural work is work, from two points of view. The first looks at artists who understand that their aesthetic acts are indeed work—in other words, proof that “art” is still work. The second looks at artists and thinkers who see work, when well organized, as liberating, rewarding, and analogous to play—in other words, proof that “work” is not inherently negative. It concludes with suggestions about how architectural work can be reconstituted to be more fun and fulfilling (playful) while also being more financially savvy (creative work requiring just rewards).
