ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book outlines the successful curricular revision process at Franklin & Marshall College which involved creating a series of theme-based courses that foreground texts and films at every level of German-language learning. It stresses the ways faculty can best prepare students to ready themselves for their future careers in a rapidly changing world by developing transferable skills such as creative and innovative thinking. The book presents various initiatives for ensuring that undergraduate German classrooms are safe, inclusive intellectual homes and diverse spaces. It illustrates how the authors' collaborative efforts enabled them to invigorate a wilting German program at Concordia University in spite of the challenges they faced due to their three-year Limited Term Appointments.
