ABSTRACT
This chapter gives an overview of the history of Polish translations of French children's literature from 1918 to 2014. The emphasis is placed on the publishers, as this kind of literary import is seen as largely dependent on their choices. The study was carried out using a bibliometric approach. The period under consideration is discussed in three sections: the Second Polish Republic (1918–44), People's Poland (1945–89), and the Third Polish Republic (from 1990). Each of them presents (a) the situation of the publishing market and children's literature at that time, (b) the place given by the publishers to translated French children's literature in the entire production for this group of readers, (c) the choices of the publishers of Polish translations, with special attention to gaps and modifications in the translation import. The final remarks highlight the changing nature of translational import of children's literature from France to Poland in the last century and the impact of the publishers of translations on its size and shape, but also the dependence of these agents on the sociopolitical context.
