ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of the many memory mistakes our emotions can cause within the investigative and legal arenas. The chapter begins with a description of what emotions are and which types of emotion people expect to find alongside various recollections. The authors discuss the relationship between emotions and false memories, and how that relationship unfolds in children with trauma and other types of adverse childhood experiences. The evolutionary benefits of the emotion-memory connection are discussed. Throughout, the chapter highlights the effects of human bias and stereotypes, and how the biases and stereotypes of investigative and legal professionals can affect their work and affect the lives of adults and children who come in contact with the legal system.
