ABSTRACT
Democracy has swung pendulum-like in Latin America. Historically, the countries in the region alternate short periods of political stability with brief dictatorships and destabilised governments. Transparency and accountability are practices that are not sufficiently consolidated. Media could contribute to the advancement of these values, but on a number of occasions it makes little effort to do so. After all, this goes against their own interests, since the largest means of communication belong to conglomerates that oligopolise the sector and support certain governments. Two new movements bring hope to the defenders of democracy in Latin America: one, independent journalistic actions have become more effective for the monitoring of powers; two, whistleblowers have allowed leaks of information that help to reschedule political and social agenda in the region.
