ABSTRACT

The regions range from absolute monarchies and highly authoritarian states to varying levels of democracy and are home to variations of high, low, and medium income and developing, urban, rural, and transitional societies. Considering that Asia constitutes 48 countries, this project represents some of the largest and diverse media markets in the region. The representative sample chapters exemplify the vast array of media practices, governance, and challenges. The country reports also indicate that digital media, in the last decade, has rapidly changed the information landscape even if the penetration is uneven across Asia. In a digital ecosphere with no clear boundaries, accountability becomes almost impossible to propagate and measure. Media accountability instruments, which have been successfully used in practices of traditional and mainstream media, have been largely absent in the evolution and spread of digital media.
