ABSTRACT

The United Kingdom has a hybrid media system, and the regulatory landscape reflects this. Accountability in broadcast news is underpinned by legislation and other statutory instruments, while the legacy print media largely self-regulate. On the surface, the situation seems healthy, but there are some causes for concern. Broadcast regulation has seen the consolidation of powers under a single body and increased political pressure, while press regulation has fragmented following the Leveson Inquiry, raising doubts about the effectiveness of the current system.
