ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the conflict which led to unprecedented violence which was caused by a number of factors such as food riots, inflation, war veterans’ compensation fund, post-independence wars, the economic structural adjustment programme and sanctions, among others. It argues that the government of national unity could have done better in bringing about reconciliation if the Organ on National Healing, Reconciliation, and Integration could have incorporated people with expertise in dealing with conflict transformation rather than depending on politicians. The chapter shows that the inclusion of civil society organisations, traditional leaders, church leaders, academics, local communities, and other relevant stakeholders could have brought the much needed reconciliation and peace in Zimbabwe. The United States and other Western countries imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe's government in 2002 because of the reports of election rigging and gross human rights abuses. The conflict-resolution in Zimbabwe should be understood in terms of the signing of the global political agreement among the main political parties.
