ABSTRACT

This chapter explores an alternative vocabulary and structure to begin the project that admittedly will take considerable additional effort. In organizing the hierarchy of argument, Richard Weaver had plagiarized Kenneth Burke’s project that identified philosophical positions by the origin of their reasoning in particular pentadic terms, at least in Burke’s view. The argument calls upon the value that the society places upon health. The force of the argument will transform the various substance invoked into support for the claim. Thinking through the synthesis by bringing various substances into conjunction to give an argument force elevates awareness of the complex resources that enable responsible and productive argument. Argument arrays substance to advance the argumentative ecology’s efforts to come to terms with their lives and their times. Ahead is work with the metaphoric power of new vocabulary–ecology, synthesis, substance–terms that in analogous contexts suggest additional resources to point the way.
