ABSTRACT

Sometimes a photographic outcome is inadequate for any number of reasons. Sometimes there are technical problems or sometimes the depth of field (DOF) for example at a given magnification is inadequate. An image with a very shallow DOF or a camera that produces lower digital resolution than needed can be a source of frustration and disappointment when images fall short of expectations. Photographs that are the result of using other photographs are described as computational photographs. In close-up photography and other magnified imaging techniques, a limited amount of DOF is produced by a lens. The focus range is influenced by the system’s magnification and the aperture selection. It is important to create a photographic and lighting approach where nothing changes between exposures except for where the focus is placed in the individual frames. Blending of images with various exposures is accomplished by what is called tone mapping.
