ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. This book aims to document common or particular patterns and effects of principal time use across countries, identify common or major causes that shape principal time use across countries, contribute to theorizing the under-researched area of principal time use, and develop a framework of data collection and related analytical tools of principal time use that can be applied to contexts of different countries. It provides a different perspective on time use by focusing on the emotional workload of Israeli principals through an analysis of 50 interviews. Besides investing considerable time in their manifold responsibilities, Oplatka demonstrates how emotional labor and managing feelings of concern, distress, and worry as well as navigating the emotional concerns of others was tied to the multitude of responsibilities principals faced.
