ABSTRACT

This chapter will discuss three pivotal issues surrounding migration heritage: definition, participation, and exceptionalism. These issues will be related to the findings of the Ghent City Museum project ‘Sticking Around’ (2014). The first part will discuss the broad definition of migration heritage used in this project, and its repercussions for participants and audiences. The second part will focus on the attempts and eventually failure of ‘Sticking Around’ to become truly participatory. The third part looks at the tension between focusing on migration and mainstreaming it within the heritage field as a whole. Throughout, the chapter makes a number of recommendations for future work.
