ABSTRACT

Two of the central principles underlying the professional ethics of teachers are that they should do their best for their students and not exploit their positions of responsibility in so doing. Recent criticisms of some deployments of AIED systems have claimed that both these principles have been violated. This chapter briefly examines these ethical criticisms, and then goes on to explore some of the ethical dilemmas that can be encountered in “doing one’s best”. Both human teachers and AIED systems sometimes feel the need to challenge, discomfort, confuse or provide false feedback to their students in the short term as a means to increase learning in the long term.
