ABSTRACT

This chapter consists of a conversation between two formerly incarcerated Indigenous women, Fran Chaisson and Bobbie Kidd, and doctoral candidate and critical prison studies scholar Isabel Scheuneman Scott. In this chapter, we explore Fran and Bobbie’s experiences of incarceration and their subsequent involvement in the P4W (Prison for Women) Memorial Collective. The first part of the chapter provides a brief overview of some of the critical issues and key moments in P4W’s history. Next, Fran and Bobbie discuss some of the abuse that they personally experienced and witnessed at P4W. They also talk about how they became involved in the P4W Memorial Collective as well as the proposed Memorial Garden towards which the Collective is currently working. The chapter ends with some brief concluding remarks regarding mixed perspectives about the closure of P4W, some considerations surrounding attempts to reform and/or decolonize a colonial carceral system, and the importance of a Memorial Garden on the grounds of the former P4W.
