ABSTRACT

The growth rate of Halal products globally receives special attention by many parties, especially Muslim communities such as Halal users, Halal providers, Halal traders, Halal manufacturers, as well as Halal authorities or regulators. The establishment of standards in any Halal-related activities is important as it will become the main reference or guideline to the stakeholders to support the development of Halal industry. At present, only four countries in Southeast Asia have developed Halal standards, namely Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand. Since Malaysia is known as the leader in the Halal industry in Southeast Asia and in the world, this study aims to deliberate the Halal standards development in logistics and supply chain with referring to Malaysia as a central case. In this study, the discussion will be focused on the development of MS2400 Halal supply chain standards which consist of three main elements, namely transportation, warehousing and retailing. The exploration of old version and newly revised version of MS2400 is also presented. This study is developed based on an abductive approach and employed a content analysis method. Apart from the document review of MS2400, the discussion in this chapter was also gathered via observation during national consultation of MS2400 held in Kuala Lumpur, as well as desk research activities with regard to Halal logistics standards. A number of frontier research areas with regard to standard development and application are also presented in this chapter.
