ABSTRACT

The Gran Chaco Region occupies some 1 million km2. It extends some 1200 km from the headwaters of the Mamore river system in Bolivia to the northern regions of the Argentinian Pampas. It stretches from the foothills of the Andes to the Paraguay-Parana Rivers, some 650 km to the east. If look at the planting months of October and November, again large differences are brought out. The coefficient of variation for the monthly data would be substantially larger than the coefficient of variation for the yearly data. The former is far more crucial in the planning of which crop to plant and it defines more accurately the precipitation risk for food production endeavours in the Chaco. Major evidence of the successful battle with an adverse climatic condition and isolated geographical location is the way in which Femheim and the other Chaco colonies have had the confidence to develop agriculturally related industries.
